Edie’s Artist Statement
Edie Cassell is a Master Gardener who started Florabuelas Flower Farm in Seguin TX with her husband, Alberto Martinez, in 2022. Florabuelas produces cut flowers for bouquets sold at the farm and at Seguin’s Austin Street Farmers and Artisans Market, from April through November.
Originally from Indiana, Edie made her home in Austin’s East Cesar Chavez neighborhood in 2008 where she helped secure and administer a $50,000 grant from the Austin Parks Foundation to design and develop the Festival Beach Community Garden on three acres of Austin city park land. From 2009-2012, she was one of the garden’s main administrators as well as the community outreach and education coordinator.
Edie also helped establish and served on the Board of Directors of Farmshare Austin from 2012-2015. This small, local, organic food-growing non-profit has as its mission to educate farmers in all aspects of farming, provide food access, and preserve land in the greater Austin area.
Throughout her career as an educator, Edie has continually been engaged in community outreach and organization. After periods living and working in The Netherlands and California, Edie spent ten years at Purdue University in northern Indiana, teaching international students while completing a doctoral degree in Applied Linguistics. During this period, she also spent time managing an African dance band, touring with a Mediterranean folk dance group, and organizing international speaking and musical performances all while facilitating a campus-wide, ongoing, multicultural party coalition.
Edie moved to Texas to accept a position at Texas A&M University, College Station, in the Department of Teaching, Learning and Culture. While working as a professor at A&M from 2007-2019, she developed and led eight study abroad programs in Italy, Switzerland, Costa Rica, and Mexico.
