Nature As A Muse, Andie Alysworth

Andie Alysworth (b. 2000, Miami, FL) is a London-based installation and textile artist whose practice explores kinship with the more-than-human world through the lens of Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK), learned via her indigenous Ecuadorian and Venezuelan heritage.
Each of Aylsworth’s works exemplify interspecies collaboration and follow the guidelines of the Honourable Harvest, done in order to carry out the responsibilities we have to the Land through everyday acts of practical reverence. These actions are what is known as acts of reciprocity.
Using reciprocal care, Aylsworth shifts the anthropocentrism found in the west towards cohabitation with our more-than-human kin. Utilizing lessons learned from indigenous ways
of being Aylsworth shines a light on the detrimental perspective of western-centric environmentalism and reductive binaries of this perspective, such as nature vs. culture,
human vs. nonhuman or European vs. global viewpoints.
Aylsworth represents these dichotomies in her practice through her use of seemingly conflicting materials, pairing reclaimed steel metal frameworks with natural fibre textiles. Yet through her combination of the practices of traditional natural dyeing and contemporary industrial welding, Aylsworth proves that humankind does not stand outside of nature but instead shares an innate inseparability from it.
