Lucille Bonato is a French artist born in 1994 in Saint Jean de Braye. She graduated with a master’s
degree in the College of Art and Design from Angers in 2018, continued her studies in Creative Writing
and completed a master’s degree in Research and Creation in Paris in 2025. Her work draws on our intimate relationship with images. Those precious moments that slip away from us, the ones we forget. She manipulates these family archives to better remember them in installations using 3D technology or in writing.
“Where Do Gardens Go When They Die” questions our relationship with the digital landscape; a garden
and his gardener, doomed to disappear, are replayed one last time in a video game combining family
archive footage and digital images. A final conversation with Bonato’s grandfather about his garden and the plants that will survive him. The digital garden is subject to the same hazards as the real garden: it has to deal with weeds, pests, and the weather. It also deals with digital mourning and the preservation of the garden. Replaying this past, through these images from Bonato’s childhood, is a final attempt to preserve this garden and her memories.
