“This piece is part of a larger series that explores the quiet authority of rural American structures—objects that exist without spectacle yet carry the weight of memory, labor, and time. Water tanks, fences, silos, and signage become forms that hold a kind of cultural residue and also as symbols to be decoded. These are elements of the landscape that are often overlooked, yet they shape the visual and emotional character of the environments they inhabit. This one began with reference photos taken just off of I-35 on the way back from Laredo. Everything there felt quiet, slower, and forgotten. The disheveled house, remnants of a shed, and a sign post which said nothing and pointed nowhere grabbed my attention. There was no clear focal point, no real activity, just a grouping of things that felt like they had been left behind but not fully abandoned. The sign sits at the center, but it doesn’t do anything. It’s still standing, still built for a purpose, but whatever it once marked feels gone. The rest of the structures hold that same tension. The exaggerated orange ground flattens everything out and removes any sense of depth or realism. The greens and muted tones of the house push back just enough to keep it grounded. It’s less about describing the place and more about holding onto how it felt when I stumbled upon it: dry, still, and stuck.”
